Many people don’t understand the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist.
A Registered Dietitian (RD) has undergone the training outlined above and has trained with dietetics professionals both in their internship and throughout their undergraduate education. A dietitian is registered to practice and is normally licensed by his/her state.
A Nutritionist is basically an individual who knows more about nutrition (or some part of nutrition) than the average individual. Many states do not license or regulate the term “Nutritionist”, so that anyone can call themselves one. Some states have licensure boards to verify that someone is a licensed nutritionist.
