I’m always frustrated when I’m in the middle of a recipe and realize I don’t have an ingredient. Below is a list (in alphabetical order) of substitutions I’ve found that really work. So, save yourself a trip to the store and make a substitution! Keep checking back for new substitutions and share your own with me at nutrition.ellen@yahoo.com. Unless otherwise specified, mix the ingredients given and store in a cool, dry place and substitute for the ingredient 1:1.

Chili Powder

Common Uses: Chili, “Texas” or Mexican flavored dishes

1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
2 teaspoons garlic powder

Old Bay Seasoning

Common Uses: Seasoning for dishes with fish

1 Tbsp. ground bay leaves
2-1/2 tsp. celery salt
1-1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. ground white pepper
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp. ground mace
