Cinnamon Dough Ornaments
At the MSU Holiday Bazaar, I sold Cinnamon Dough Ornaments on a small Christmas tree. I had so much fun making and smelling them that I thought I’d share the recipe with you! These ornaments are very easy to make and look great simply cut out (like cookies) or decorated with paint.
1 cup cinnamon
1/4 cup wood glue
3/4 cup warm water
1 small bottle of cinnamon oil
extra cinnamon to dust work surface
plastic drinking straw
2 yards (1/8 inch wide) red satin ribbon
Put cinnamon in a bowl; combine glue and water; add to cinnamon and mix. Add cinnamon oil. Mix well.
Dust work area with cinnamon powder and knead the dough. Let it rest about 15 minutes. Knead again. If crumbly, add warm water 1 teaspoon at a time. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out ornaments.
Cut 1 inch pieces from the drinking straw, stick in appropriate place on each ornament to put ribbon through for hanging. Leave piece of straw in ornament until dry. Use toothpick to make eyes or other features, if desired. Use a series of deep dots to create lines, so as not to stretch ornament while wet.
Allow to dry naturally. Turn twice daily to prevent curling. Ornament will shrink to 3/4 of original size. Take out piece of drinking straw. Cut satin ribbon to make a hanger, loop through, and tie.
