Health Benefits of Honey

Health Benefits of Honey

* Honey is one of the most easily digested and broken down carbohydrates that we know of. It’s a great sweet fuel for hungry kids and adults.
* Hypoglycemia Treatment – Since it is broken down so easily, honey can actually be absorbed through the cheek! This could come in handy if you ever encounter a person with diabetes whose blood sugar has gotten so LOW that they pass out. Spreading honey on their cheeks provides a sugar source without the fear of choking (of course, make sure they are having a LOW, not HIGH, blood sugar!).
* Allergy Relief – My family appreciates this benefit of honey, since we are all plagued by allergies! Consuming LOCAL honey has been shown to help with the treatment/prevention of allergy symptoms. Also, a spoonful of Buckwheat Honey has also been shown to help treat nighttime cough in children.
* Cholesterol Lowering – A study done showed that healthy individuals with high cholesterol who replaced their sugar intake with honey found lowered cholesterol when they returned to the doctor.
* Gastrointestinal Help – Honey has been shown to be helpful in both healing of the bowel and can have a laxative effect.
* Other Stuff – Just google “health benefits of honey” and you will find websites claiming this great food can help fight osteoporosis, cancer, and GI complaints while aiding wound healing, providing vitamins and minerals, and much more. Substituting honey for sugar in your tea, cereal, and cookies is a small step toward getting more of this healthy food!
* REMEMBER – Do not feed honey to children under 2 years old. Honey has the possibility of containing botulism spores and is dangerous for children younger than 2 to consume.
