Healthy Cooking Tip – Perfect Greens and Beans

Healthy Cooking Tip – Perfect Greens and Beans

Instead of seasoning your vegetables (greens, green beans, spinach, squash, etc) with fatty meats like bacon, bacon grease, and ham hocks, try using healthier options that will still taste delicious. Here are some suggestions:
– Instead of using bacon, grease, or ham hocks, try using a lean turkey neck to season your next pot of greens or beans. The turkey neck adds flavor but not much fat. Many people love to eat the meat off the necks. Alot of people also enjoy using low-sodium turkey bacon.
– Try seasoning your vegetables with a little vegetable oil or olive oil instead of using butter or lard. Just a couple of tablespoons will season a pot.
– Buy no-added-salt varieties of canned and frozen vegetables. Doing this lets you choose how much salt you want to put in your vegetables. If you have the regular types, rinse the vegetables before cooking to get that salt off then add however much you need.
– Try using different herbs, spices, and seasonings to flavor your vegetables such as pepper, basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, artichokes, onion powder, etc.
– Use other vegetables as seasoning such as onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, bell pepper, green onions, and celery.
