Healthy Food Spotlight – Blueberries

Blueberries are a delicious, nutrient-rich fruit and one of the richest sources of antioxidants among all fruits and vegetables. Since they have these healthy “Antioxidants” they provide many wonderful nutritional benefits.
Aging (something we’re all trying to avoid) is related to oxidative stress, a time when free radicals are produced. These free radicals can lead to cancer, atherosclerosis (seen with heart disease), wrinkles, etc. Antioxidants get rid of free radicals, thereby helping fight these diseases and signs of aging.
Blueberries are abundant this time of year fresh from gardens and in supermarkets. They provide all these benefits with only about 80 calories per half cup, so make sure you throw some blueberries into your diet! Here are some suggestions for adding blueberries to your day:
– Sprinkle a handful of blueberries on your cereal or yogurt in the morning
– Add blueberries to your favorite dessert (ice cream, cobblers, pies, cakes, etc)
– Make blueberry muffins or bread for breakfast or a snack
– Add some dried blueberries to your favorite snack mix or nuts
– Mix blueberries with your favorite fruits in a fruit salad
– Make the blueberry muffins above to have for breakfast, lunch, or snack!
