Healthy Holiday Recipe Substitution Tip of the Week

Healthy Holiday Recipe Substitution Tip of the Week

Here’s this week’s Healthy Holiday Cooking Tip:
Find the Fat – Think about what you might gain or lose with a substitution (if you replace a fat source with another fat source, you may not have done much to improve your product). Make a mental list of all the fat sources in your recipe (butter, shortening, chocolate or other baking chips, nuts, peanut butter, etc) and decide which ones you want to cut down on. Try to cut back on the saturated fat sources (solid fats) and consider replacing them with a healthier unsaturated fat option (such as olive oil). You can usually cut the fat from a recipe in half without sacrificing much taste (just make sure you add in a few teaspoons of water to keep the recipe moist).
