Healthy Holiday Recipe Substitution Tip of the Week

Lighten Up Your Thanksgiving Meal

I once read a piece of token cooking advice that said something like, “if you’re going to take healthy foods to a party, they’d better taste good.” Instead of trying to go totally fat free or totally full fat on Thanksgiving Day, opt for “lite” versions of your favorite products when you’re shopping this week. While fat free products often don’t mix into your recipe quite as well as regular products and sometimes alter the taste, using lite products will provide a good balance between healthy and delicious. In green bean casserole, try using 98% fat free cream of mushroom soup instead of regular. Use lite sour cream and lite or reduced-fat mayonnaise in spinach and artichoke dip and use lite cream cheese for the pre-meal cheese ball and the cheesecake. Think about using low-fat and lite products to get rid of a lot of calories without getting rid of much flavor. In fact, most people will never notice that you made a substitution!
