Thanks to Joeann Foster for sharing her favorite turkey recipe. She said that she initially got this recipe from Emily Barnes and it has worked perfectly for years. Joeann said that this turkey preparation never burns and is always juicy and delicious. Also, taking care of it the night before means one less thing to worry about Thanksgiving day!
Here’s what she does:
Wash turkey, rub in oil, put the same ingredients inside or out or none at all as you would normally use for your turkey. Turn turkey breast side down so that all juices run down and keep the turkey moist. Bake at 350 uncovered for one hr to kill any bacteria and then cook at 200 for the rest of the time. There’s no cut off time. You can not overcook it.
Multiply recommended cooking time x 3 (i.e. 20# turkey takes 5 hrs so w/ slow cook method x 3 = 15 hrs.)
Joeann says: “If I put it on at 10pm and it’s ready around 10 am, but we are not ready to eat until noon or 1pm…no problem. The only problem is that it falls apart when you get it out, not much carving which I also love.”
