Snack Ideas

March is National Nutrition Month!

Thanks to Mrs. Donna from Starkville, Mississippi, for this week’s healthy idea: “What is good to eat if you are just starving, about to blow the diet program, and there is nothing around that is “legal” or nutritious.  Other than WATER!!!  What do you eat to satisfy you until your next meal?”

Here are some ideas:
– Most (nonstarchy) vegetables have about 25 calories per cup. This would include carrot sticks, celery sticks, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, etc. These foods make great snacks to tote along and munch on. Get a little fat-free ranch dip, if you’d like.
– Fruits contain about 60-80 calories per serving (a small apple, pear, or orange, 15 grapes, etc). That’s not bad compared to most “quick fix” foods.
– A good idea is to eat something with a little protein right as you start to feel hungry (don’t wait for the starving, have to have something or I’m going to die point). My favorite protein snacks are low-fat string cheese, a slice of turkey (or, wrap the turkey around the string cheese), peanut butter (but watch it because there are alot of calories in peanut butter – a little goes a long way), low-fat yogurt, or a small handful of almonds.
– If you’ve gotta have something starchy, reach for the “whole grain” crackers with 3+ grams of fiber, light popcorn (3 cups = 100 calories), or baked chips. Fiber helps fill you up and give you satiety, so reaching for a high fiber snack helps avoid those late afternoon binges.
– Another great very low calorie (but tasty) option, is to get some sugar-free lemonade or koolaid “sticks” (the ones you mix with a bottle of water) to drink with your snack. The taste sometimes helps me feel like I’ve eaten more than I did.
– To sum it all up: THINK AHEAD! Pack a snack to avoid those hunger surges. Mix and match carbohydrate and protein snacks (i.e. cheese and crackers, veggies and a little peanut butter, popcorn and a few almonds, fruited yogurt, etc). Grabbing a low-fat yogurt at 3pm might help you avoid eating a whole bag of potato chips at 4pm!
