If you suffer from yearly holiday weight gain, you’re not alone. You may be interested, however, in the fact that overeating is not the only reason we put on pounds. Stress (i.e. extra holiday shopping, parties, too long of a to do list, etc) can lead to an increase in your body weight, especially body fat around your abdominal area.
When your body is stressed, you release norepinephrine as the “fight” symptom. After norepinepherine is released, your body releases epinephrine as a “flight” symptom (anxiety). This helps to trigger the release of excess cortisol, a hormone that carries fat within the body (especially to the abdominal region) and promotes fat production, leading to excess weight gain.
So, relax and enjoy your holiday.
