The Secret to the Perfect Diet

The Secret to the Perfect Diet

If you read that title and your eyes immediately jumped to see what 1 food or pill I’m going to tell you to get so that you will have the perfect diet then be prepared to be disappointed.
I’ve been studying nutrition and working in the field for over four years and there’s one message that has been consistent with nearly every successful diet or weight loss program and that is: BALANCE. Balance is the key to every area of life. A good family life is balanced between children, parents, and distractions that come along. A good church is balanced between fellowship, worship, and studies. In the same way, a good diet is balanced between all the food groups, with no one food being eaten in excessive amounts.
Take, for instance, vitamin C. When you don’t have enough vitamin C, you get scurvy, a terrible bone disease. When you get too much vitamin C, you get sick to your stomach. But when you eat the right amount of vitamin C, you ward away colds and keep yourself healthier. Exercise is the same way. When we don’t exercise enough, we gain weight, don’t have enough energy, don’t have healthy bones, muscles, or joints, etc. When we exercise too much, we develop overuse injuries and wear out our bodies. But when exercising in moderation (30-60 minutes every day) our whole body is healthier and we’re at decreased risk of disease, weight gain, fragile bones, etc.
So, balance your diet by trying to eat foods from every food group every day. The food groups are: meat and beans, milk, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Try to eat no more than 1-2 servings from any given food group at a meal. BALANCE the food groups by mixing up your diet. Having variety will also help you not get bored with food and eat out of redundancy.
